Frederick Settle, Jr. Obituary

Frederick Marshall Settle, Jr., a resident of Quitman, GA, passed away at his home, Friday, March 22, 2024 with his beloved wife, Janet by his side.  He was 84 years old.

Fred was born February 2, 1940, and grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky where he earned the distinction of Eagle Scout at age 14. Upon graduation from high school, he was awarded a football scholarship to Mississippi State University.  After a knee injury, he returned to MSU as a member of the golf team where he was named Captain.  His success as a college golfer led to a golf career spanning over 40 years.  After marrying Sherry Graves Settle, he began his career as an assistant at Country Club of Mobile. Soon, he was hired as the Dothan Country Club’s Head Golf Professional and Superintendent at age 24 where he helped grow the Press Thornton Future Masters Junior Golf Tournament and also taught his future son-in-law, King Thornton, among many others, to play golf. In 1974, Fred moved back to Kentucky to work with his brother, Tommy in a joint venture with the late Colonel Harland Sanders. Utilizing skills gained as an entrepreneur in the hospitality industry, Fred returned to the golf profession as a businessman working with Resorts International (Nassau, Bahamas), International Management Group (Hawaii, Australia & Singapore), Elkington Course Design and International Golf Design. Managing and developing projects in 16 countries: Australia, Bahamas, Burma, China, England, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Philippines, St. Lucia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam was something special for a “country boy from Kentucky” as he liked to say. During his later years, he and Janet began breeding, raising and showing Jack Russell Terriers.  Forever a competitor, this “hobby” led to recognition on a national stage with many champions coming from their kennel. His illustrious golf career and hobbies allowed for the formation of many enduring friendships and fun memories, which he enjoyed sharing (on repeat) with anyone within earshot.  He especially loved his hours long phone conversations with Eddie Andrews and grandson, Luke.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Marshall Settle, Sr. and Dorothy Linthicum Settle; sons Frederick Marshall Settle, III (Trey) and William Ashley Settle; grandson Frederick King Thornton; sister, Suzanne Settle Graham. Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Settle; daughter, Stephanie Settle Thornton (King); his grandchildren, Maura Evelyn Thornton,  Lucas King Farish Thornton, Ariel Settle, Caitlin Settle, Tyler Settle; his brother, Thomas Settle (Cherry), nieces, Melia Graham Fleshman (Mark), Jennifer Settle Reese (Chris) and nephew, Thomas Settle, Jr.
